University of Alabama

Renovation of Barnwell Hall

Located in the middle of a large concentration of sororities on the University of Alabama campus, the 1930’s Barnwell Hall was originally a women’s gym. A team goal was to maintain as much of the historical architectural fabric of the interior and exterior as possible.

The challenge was to design a renovation that would respond to the interests and needs of the predominately female community.  A “backyard” patio and lawn provide additional activity and social spaces.
